Mobile Monday Peer Awards are Coming - the Call for Estonian mobile start-ups

Mobile Monday Peer Awards on üks tunnustatumaid innovatsiooni toetavaid mobiili start-up'ide auhindu maailmas ning on taaskord avatud konkureerimiseks. Auhinnad jagatakse välja rohkem kui 1000 pealise publiku ees Mobile World Congressi ajal ning sellel konkursil osalemine on suurepärane soovitus startup'idele ka tulevikus.

Võitjatele on see suur tunnustus ning võitjad saavad oma start-up'i esitleda Barcelonas. Täpsemalt konkursi kohta lugege Peer Awards'i kodulehelt või konkursi avalikust teatest SIIT. Eelmiste aastate võitjate kohta saab lugeda siit.

Sel aastal on selektsiooni protsessi veidi muudetud: http://mobilepeerawards.com/how-to-participate. Osaleja peavad kandidatuuri ise üles seadma (Eesti mobiili start-up'id peakisd registreerima end Tallinn / Tartu chapteri alla).

Sel aastal kandideerides tuleb tõsiselt tähelepanu pöörata sellele, kuidas start-up ennast esitleb.

Oma start-up'i esitamiseni on aega 31.

Edu kandideerimisel!

Kui soovite rohkem infot, kirjutage team ät momoestonia.com

Thank You for another Mobile Monday

On Monday we met at the Mobile Marketing & Advertising event. We were about 80 people listening to different presentations covering the given topic, plus the three Estonian mobile operators presented their Advertising Reach Package (all the presentations are included below).

As said the center of the event was on mobile advertising, we were also happy to be the first to present and speak about the brand-new Estonian Operators Mobile Advertising Reach Package. But the topic was more widely covered with different case studies on mobile marketing tools and opportunities by Josep M. Nolla from Tele2 and the Media Agencies view was presented by Hanno Kindel from Media house.

We also had Mart Kikas as a guest to present his upcoming Nordic Mobile Media conference and he offered to Mobile Monday community a discount on the conference registration (25% off - look at his presentation slides below for the discount code).

The event was stirred and then nicely wrapped up with our traditional panel discussion. During the panel people rose different questions but also gave answers related to the different players on the mobile market, but also to different ideas where and how to use mobile advertising or what the future might be in mobile marketing world.

We would also like to ask for your feedback on the event and Mobile Monday events in general, for that please fill out our short questionary here.

Valimo Signs Elisa to Offer Mobile Identification in Finland and Estonia

Valimo, the Finnish mobile identification service provider, has signed agreement with the second largest Finnish mobile operator Elisa.

The agreement allows Elisa’s 2.5 million mobile customers in Finland and another 340 000 in Estonia to use mobile phone as everyday electronic identification method. With Valimo’s solution the customers can login to internet services with a single PIN code, and also digitally sign documents. Thus mobile phone can replace web banking credentials now used extensively for secure identification in the region.
Valimo develops software to secure and perform transactions in both mobile and fixed network environments, offering solutions for digital signing, authentication, and validation. Valimo’s service uses PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) and works on all handsets and devices, which use a SIM card as the user’s secret key is stored on the card. Identification or confirmation request is sent onto the user’s screen, and the user will use his/her own PIN code to verify. The service requires country specific registration of the person’s identity and the SIM card. In Finland the registration is done by the police authorities.
Valimo’s services have been well received , and the company recently announced the the Turkish operator Turkcell’s customers recently exceeding 1,8 million mobile transactions.

SkypeOut Feature Added to 3's Skype-Enabled Phones

Skype Journal kirjutab, et Inglise Mobiilioperaator 3 on astunud järgmise sammu, mis vähendab drastiliselt rahvusvaheliste mobiilikõnede hinda (loomulikult helistades suvaliselt nende poolt pakutavalt Skype'i toetavalt mobiiltelefonilt). Sisuliselt tähendab see seda, et 3'e kliendid ei saa mitte ainult teha tasuta kõnesid teistele oma Skype'i kontaktidele, kuid ka suvalisele lauatelefonile ja mobiilile kasutades selleks SkypeOut'i sarnast teenust SkypeOut'i hindadega. Skype'ilt Skype'ile kõned ja tekstisõnumid on samuti jätkuvalt täeisti tasuta.

Skype Journal writes: "Mobile carrier pioneer 3 has taken another step that reduces costs for mobile calling worldwide from any of the Skype-enabled mobile phone handsets in their offering. Effectively it means that 3's customers can not only make free calls to other Skype contacts but also to any landline and mobile worldwide via an implementation of a SkypeOut type of service at SkypeOut rates. Skype-to-Skype calls remain totally free as well as Skype Instant Messaging activity."

Thanks for another great event!

The event last week was the best so far - thank you for that!

We had nearly 100 of you on our very mobile Monday and a row of prominent speakers covering extremely interesting topics. The open panel discussion was very active as usual and the demos had an interested audience.

We would like to give our special thanks to our speakers:

  • Director & Head of Multimedia Sales of Ericsson, Joachim Bergman started with the overall view and description of different problems in the mobile media area - how different players in the field have different views on the subject matter although they "share the same bed". He drew out the outlines of the mobile media business, counterparts and the logic of this business. He also described the difficulties of this emerging market related to the media rights costs, the size of the current market and the miscommunication between parties. The talk was a great introduction for the people who had never peaked into the mobile media sector, giving a very good overview.

  • Head of Data Communication and Content Services' Group from EMT, Ando Meentalo gave an operator's view on the subject matter. He began his talk by giving out two Nokia phones, both running live mobile TV on them - if I'm not mistaken it was the MTV's The Real World show. Both phones were running on different technologies, one showing DVB-H broadcast TV and the other streaming TV over a 3.5G network. To my surprise the quality was just amazing, I could even read the Estonian subtitles on the phone screens. The talk was also interesting giving a lot of new information about the mobile media sector in Estonia.

  • IT Manager of Delfi, Mait Tafenau gave us a presentation of Delfis' brand new mobile platform, basically two new mobile platforms, one for iPhone like mobile devices iphone.delfi.ee and one for older mobile phones at mobile.publik.ee. This was the first public presentation of the platform, short and to the point and again, audience had the possibility to try out the portals on different devices from an iPhone to a Sony Playstation Portable.

  • The Open Panel Discussion featured this time: Andres Jõesaar - the Head of Corporate Sales and Content Services at Tele2, Jaanus Lillenberg - the Head of Development and Marketing at Postimees, Jouko Vierumäki - the CEO of Fromdistance, and Joachim Bergman the speaker from Ericsson. The discussion was lead by Priit Salumaa - one of the Founders of MoMo Estonia. The Discussion again emphasized the different view of mobile operators, media companies, hardware providers and application development companies. The discussion was both heated and involved between the audience and panelists, covering among other things different failures and success stories.

  • After the presentations and the open panel discussion Ericsson had two demos going on: MeOnTV and MSDP. The MeOnTV was quite a remarkable system to handle and present different TV streams on mobile phones and other devices, and MSDP was a very powerful tool to build and maintain mobile portals.

The informal part of the event was very relaxed with networking between the attendees. We have to thank our very kind sponsor Ericsson for the wonderful variety of snacks and beverages.
This was surely our best MoMo Estonia event so far, with some engaging discussions and interesting presentations on an interesting and novel topic - thankyou to all attendees!

As always, you can check out photos from the event on our Flickr stream.

iPhone 3G Coming To Estonia on August 22nd

iPhone 3G jõuab Eestisse 22. augustil

TeliaSonera ja EMT alustavad iPhone 3G müüki Eestis 22. augustil 2008.
iPhone 3G ühendab endas esimese põlvkonna iPhone’i ainulaadsed omadused ning võimaldab senise iPhone´iga võrreldes kasutada 3G võrgus kaks korda kiiremat andmesidet*. Lisaks on iPhone 3G-l sisse-ehitatud GPS asukohapõhiste teenuste jaoks ning kasutusel on iPhone 2.0 tarkvara, mis toetab Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync’i. Samuti sisaldab uus iPhone sadu lisaprogramme, mis tulid kaasa juba müügis oleva iPhone´iga.
“Mul on hea meel, et iPhone’i müügi alustamisega on EMT taas tõestanud oma juhtpositsiooni Eesti mobiilioperaatorite turul. iPhone’i müügiletulekuga kinnitame oma klientidele antud lubadust ”Meiega oled esimene!”,” ütles EMT peadirektor Valdo Kalm.
Kalm lisas, et iPhone´i saab osta kõigist EMT esindustest üle Eesti. “Kõige värskemat teavet iPhone 3G müügi kohta saab jooksvalt EMT koduleheküljelt www.emt.ee/iphone,” ütles ta.
EMT kuulub koos Elioni ja MicroLinkiga Eesti suurimasse telekommunikatsiooni- ja IT ettevõtete gruppi Eesti Telekom. EMT on Eesti mobiilside tehnoloogialiider, omades parimat leviulatust, tunnustatud tootearendust ja teenindust. Terviklike kodu- ja ärikommunikatsioonilahenduste loojana on Elionist saanud eelistatuim kõneside, Interneti püsiühenduse ja digitaaltelevisiooni pakkuja Eestis. MicroLinki võtmeoskus on infotehnoloogia terviklahenduste väljatöötamine.

Thanks for another great event!

Eriti täname me aga Ericsson IPX'i suure toetuse ja suurepärase catering'i eest.

  • Teiste hulgas avaldas Hanna (meie sponsori Ericsson IPX'i esindaja), et mõned Euroopa mobiilioperaatoritest pakuvad nüüd teatud sorti sisu- (content) ja teenustepakkujatele kõrgemaid käibemarginaale SMS teenuste pealt.;

  • Playtech näitas oma oma laia valikut maksemeetodeid, mis töötasid otse mobiiltelefonil nende Java-põhiste mänguklientide sees;

  • Tom Godber, MoMo Estonia ja Masabi esindajana andis (üli ;) kiire ülevaate MoMo Global Summit'ist Kuala Lumpuris, Malaisias, küsides, mida me saame teha, et lähendada Eestit ja Mobile Monday ülemaailmset community'it. Tom rääkis samuti mobiilimaksetest ning sellest milliseid nõudmisi peab mobiilimaksetele üldse esitama, et need laiamastaabilist edu saavutaks;

  • Meie avatud vestlusring kattis ära väga laia valiku mobiilimaksetega seotud teemasid. Linnar Viik algatas arutelu ja tõi näiteks kütusefinantseerimise skeeme Sri Lanka tuk tuk taksojuhtidele. Karla Agan rääkis põhjalikult, kuidas pangad lähenevad mobiilimaksetele. Mart Kikas visandas lahendusi, kuidas me võiksime areneda m-maksete ühiskonna suunas ning Hanna Fröman valgustas mobiilimakseid üksikisiku personaalsest vaatepunktist.

Nagu alati, on võite ka seekord vaadata ürituse fotosid meie Flickr'i fotovoost.

Kõikide ettekannete slaidid asuvad all pool.

I think that everyone will agree that last Monday's mPayments event was another success, with the new format and venue working very well - so thanks to all of you for attending, thanks to our speakers and panellists, and especial thanks to Ericsson IPX for the excellent catering!

For those that could not attend, the event featured a range of very stimulating discussion interspersed with food and drink:

  • Among other things, Hanna from our sponsors Ericsson IPX revealed that some European operators are now offering to give content owners higher cuts from Premium SMS revenues for some types of content;

  • Mobi showed us how simple it is to set up their Fortumo service, which is expanding to new countries this summer - we saw the live
video link to prove their plans!

  • Playtech showed a bewildering array of payment options working live inside their Java game clients;

  • Tom Godber of MoMo Estonia and Masabi gave a (very ;) quick summary of the Global Summit asking what we can do to help bring the global MoMo community together, and also talked net pain relief as a key requirement for mPayments;

  • Our panel covered a huge range of topics, with Linnar Viik discussing petrol finance options for Sri Lankan tuk tuk drivers, Karla Agan getting to the root of how banks can address mobile services, Mart Kikas outlining how we will evolve into a mobile payment society and Hanna Fröman giving some personal perspective on the case for annonymous payments.

As always, you can check out photos from the event on our Flickr stream.

EMT has begun pre-registration for iPhone enthusiasts

As of today, all iPhone enthusiasts can register at www.emt.ee/tuleb to be on the frontline to receive first hand information about arrival of iPhone to Estonia and iPhone sales terms.

Pre-registration does not carry an obligation to purchase iPhone. Also, pre-registration does not mean reservation or pre-order for iPhone. However, pre-registration gives an opportunity to be one of the first to receive information about opening of sales. EMT will begin sending information to the list of registrants as soon as details become clear.
Sign up and stay informed about the biggest event in mobile communications this summer!

Mobile Monday Global Summit 2008 in Kuala Lumpur

MoMo Eesti esindus Mobile Monday Global Summit 2008 üritusel Kuala Lumpuris

MoMo Eesti kaasasutaja Tom Godber esindas eelmisel nädalal Mobile Monday Estonia ühendust MoMo ühenduste iga-aastasel grand-üritusel - Mobile Monday Global Summit. Seekord toimus see esimest korda Helsingist väljaspool Kuala Lumpuris, Malaisias.
Toimunud ürituse kohta loe siit www.mobilemonday.com.my/globalsummit Tomi poolt esitatud ettekanded leiad altpoolt.

EMT and Levira launch Mobile TV in Tallinn

EMT ja Levira käivitasid mobiiltelevisiooni pilootprojekti

Alates 6.maist saavad EMT kliendid Tallinnas vaadata mobiiltelefoniga telesaateid, kuna EMT ja Levira alustavad uudse Mobiil TV lahenduse (DVB-H) testimist. Mobiiliekraanilt teleprogrammide vaatamist saavad tasuta testida kõik EMT kliendid, kellel on TV-signaali vastuvõtjaga mobiiltelefon. Testperiood kestab 2008. aasta lõpuni.
Mobiil TV puhul on tegemist DVB-H ehk koduse digitelevisiooni väiksema vennaga, mis on kohandatud vaatamiseks mobiiltelefoni ekraanilt. DVB-H standardiga ei jõua telekanalid mobiiliekraanile kiire andmeside, vaid telefoni sisse ehitatud TV-signaali vastuvõtja kaudu. Uudset Mobiil TV-d toetab näiteks Nokia telefon N77.
DVB-H standardit katsetakse praegu 17 linnas üle maailma. Tulemused on teada juba 40 linnas ning 12 linna kasutab Mobiil TV-d kommertsteenusena. Kõige lähimad kasutajad on näiteks soomlased, kelle Mobiil TV kanaleid saaks hea ilma korral vaadata ka meie teletornist. Kõige paremini võeti teenus vastu Itaalias, kus DVB-H on kogunud kahe aastaga ligi pool miljonit klienti.

Starting on 6th May this year, EMT clients in Tallinn will be able to watch DVB-H mobile TV on compatible handsets like the Nokia N77.

The solution was launched in collaboration with Levira.

Thank-you for a second great MoMo Estonia meeting!

Me toimime ka tulevikus täpsel sel viisil!

Aitäh kõigile tulemast ning kohtumiseni järgmisel Mobile Monday'l juba Tallinnas!

We were competing with nearly 20C sunshine outside and dancing girls on Piragov, but there was still a big group of people who came along to Ülikooli Kohvik in Tartu last Monday, and we think it was well worth it!

As before there are a few photos on our Flickr account, and the presentations included below.
We think the new format, with drinks available before and after the presentations and an interactive panel, worked really well with a lot of good audience engagement and some interesting ideas. We will definitely be developing this in future!

The next Mobile Monday is close! We will meet again on the 28th of April at 18:00 in Tartu, Ülikooli Kohvik - a very chilled out place with a nice ambience.

The event topic will be: "Software Development for Mobile Phones: Platforms, Users, and Managing Complexity." Despite the sophisticated title we will have general discussions on the topic, to make the event interesting for everybody: students, developers, and mobile company managers.

We will aim for a different format for this event: the more formal presentations part will finish with an open panel discussion, led by 4 or 5 panelists - the experts in the field. The topic of discussion is "Future services - The best and worst." The discussion will handle current and future mobile services, the ones which are, and have been succeeding and the ones which have not, trying to drill down on the reasons for success or failure. We would like to see an open interactive discussion completely involving the audience, not limiting the talk to the panelist's circle.

Event Schedule

Thankyou For a Great Launch Event!

Me täname kõiki, kes jõudsid MoMo Estonia avaüritusele!

Me panime mõned fotod ülesse meie Flickr'i kontole, samuti mõned video ja esitluste materjalid (all pool).
Me hakkame kokkusaamisi korraldama iga 6 nädala tagant - ehk järgmine üritus on plaanitud 28.
Samuti kavatseme me näiteks varustada kõik registreerunud üritusest osavõtjad omapoolselt ettevalmistatud rinnasildiga.

Thank you to everyone who came to our opening night – it was a huge success with some great speeches and some lively networking and conversation afterwards!

We have photos on our Flickr account, and the presentations included below - video will be along soon. Before that, however, we’d like to say that we got some really valuable feedback for future events, and we are already planning changes to take it into account.
Firstly, we want to keep things from getting routine, so we’re going to put a 6 week gap between each talk – so next up is Tartu on April 28th, and then Tallinn again around June 9th. We’re going to break up future events to make them more interactive and informal, starting the drinks with the talks and breaking up the formal lecture feel. We want to encourage anyone and everyone to come forward and give short spots on interesting products, even if they aren’t directly related to the theme, and we want to have a few short break out sessions where you can vent on areas of the industry that annoy you or things that you’d like to see – with such a great mix of people you may well find a solution to your problems right then and there!
Finally, we’re going to get our acts together and make sure badges are pre-prepared for everyone who registers – apologies for dropping the ball on that one.

Elisa tõi telesaated telefoni

Kvaliteetoperaator Elisa Eesti AS avas täna oma klientidele Mobiil TV portaali, mis pakub esimesena Eestis võimalust vaadata mobiiltelefonis Aktuaalse Kaamera ja ETV24 portaali videouudiseid. Lisaks sellele suurt valikut videoklippe alates muusikavideotest kuni multifilmideni.

Mobile Monday launches in Estonia

Eestis alustab tegevust mobiilitööstusega seotud inimeste ühendus nimega Mobile Monday Estonia, mis saab olema ülemaailmse Mobile Monday võrgustiku üks riiklikest lokaalsetest harudest. Ühenduse Eesti üksuse eesmärgiks saab olema valdkondliku teabe vahendamine ning regulaarsete infoseminaride korraldamine kohalikele asjahuvilistele. Avaüritus toimub esmaspäeval, 17. märtsil Hotell Olümpia Konverentsikeskuses ning selle teemaks on "Estonia in the Global Marketplace".

Järgnesid Mobile Monday harud Tokyos, Silicon Valleys, Roomas, Milanos jm. Tänaseks on Mobile Monday levinud ca 60 linnas üle maailma. Täpsem info Mobile Monday kohta on kättesaadav ühenduse kodulehelt http://www.mobilemonday.net.

Mobile Monday kaks esimest avaüritust toimuvad Playtech Estonia toetusel.

March 17th will see the launch of Mobile Monday Estonia, with its first event to be held in Tallinn, the Conference Centre of Reval Hotel Olympia at 18:00. The event's theme is "Estonia in the Global Mobile Marketplace", and the venue is free and open to everybody interested.

This first gathering is an introduction to a series of mobile-themed events that will be held regularly. The speakers at the opening event will cover general trends and developments in the mobile industry, in the global and Estonian mobile markets. Future topics will cover issues such as mobile software development, mobile video, mobile PR and marketing, etc. The keynote speaker for the opening event is Jari Tammisto, the CEO of Mobile Monday.

The event will begin with presentations in the Conference Centre, after which attendees are invited to the hotel's Englishman pub, to socialize in an informal environment and enjoy some drinks on the house.

Mobile Monday events in Estonia are scheduled to be held monthly, alternating between Tallinn and Tartu. Tallinn events will cover general and marketing-related topics, with international speakers and a wide audience. Tartu events will focus on mobile development topics.

About Mobile Monday

Mobile Monday began almost by accident in Helsinki, Finland, during the autumn of 2000. A few well-known Finnish visionaries invited the who’s who of the Finnish mobile industry to a pub for an informal get-together, and perhaps a warming drink. The only suitable time? Monday evening.

After meeting many new faces and discussing the latest in mobile technology, the group decided to continue meeting on the first Monday of each month — and thus Mobile Monday was born. Towards the end of 2004, the movement started to spread to other areas of the world, and new MoMo chapters were started in Tokyo, Silicon Valley, Rome and Milan.

Mobile Mondays facilitate networking between small and large companies, and also between local and foreign talent. During the monthly events, attendees present innovative visions, trends, studies and forecasts from the mobile marketplace. Mobile Mondays also provide an opportunity to contribute to the education of the broader public through its publications, online presence and media partnerships.

The Mobile Monday gatherings occur every first Monday of the month, and can occur in any of the chapter cities. The nature of the meetings is very open, aiming to provide a relaxed environment where attendees can have a casual chat about any aspect of the industry or related business. Typically the meetings involve short presentations, followed by snacks and drinks.

About Mobile Monday Estonia

One of the founders of Mobile Monday Estonia, Priit Salumaa states: "The excitement surrounding the IT industry in Estonia, together with a growing interest in the mobile sector, makes it a perfect opportunity to set up a local Mobile Monday chapter. This community will help to provide international exposure and business opportunity for local companies involved in the mobile industry. Our events will help to exchange personal experiences gained in the sector, helping also to forge a common vision for the future of the mobile industry in Estonia."

About Supporters of Mobile Monday Estonia

The first two events of Mobile Monday Estonia are sponsored by Playtech, the world's largest publicly traded online gaming software supplier. Playtech Estonia is the biggest production and development unit of Playtech Ltd and one of the biggest IT-companies in Estonia, employing more than 300 leading specialists. Among other products, Playtech develops game systems for mobile devices.

International workshop SPM2008 in Tartu, Estonia

Tartu Ülikoolis toimub 10.-14. märtsini 2008 rahvusvaheline konverents
"Sotsiaalse positsioneerimise meetod 2008" (SPM 2008) mobiilpositsioneerimise rakendustest geograafias, mis toob ülikooli kokku oma ala tippspetsialiste 14 riigist.

Konverentsist võtavad osa enamus mobiilpositsioneerimise rakenduste ja asukohapõhiste teenustega tegelevate geograafide ja linnaplaneerijate aktiivsetest töögruppidest Iisraelis, Hollandis, Belgias, Austrias, USA-s ning mujal. Üritust korraldava TÜ inimgeograafia ja regionaalplaneerimise õppetooli mobiilsusuuringute töögrupp on teemaga tegelenud alates 2001. aastast. 2006. aastal osaleti muuhulgas Veneetsia arhitektuuribiennaalil Eestit esindavas interaktiivses linnaplaneerimise
projektis.

Konverensti töökeel on inglise keel.
